Ridden by Dan King for trainer Gillian Scott, Way Down South (12/1, from 16s before the off) took the William Hill Each Way Extra Challenge Series Beginners Chase at Cork.

Well beaten in a Limerick handicap just five days ago, the Ocavango gelding was fitted with a tongue-tie and cheekpieces for the first time.

Tracking the leaders when clouting the fourth-last, he quickly recovered and moved up to dispute the lead after the next.

The seven-year-old went on after the second-last, where longtime leader Rowdy blundered and unseated Eoin Walsh, and stayed on well to post a length and a quarter victory over Snow Punt

Trainer Scott said of her winner “He won his maiden hurdle this time last year and we thought he’d progress from that, but he went backwards.

“He just enjoys fences. He ran poorly in Limerick, and it was a gamble bringing him back so fast, but the cheekpieces helped, tongue-tie helped, the ground helped and dropping him back two furlongs helped.

“He jumped well. Dan knows him and it does take a jockey to know him. I’m delighted and some of the owners (WDS Syndicate) are here as well.”
