By Tom Weekes - CAFE CON LECHE is quirky and has poor recent form but scored in November and has a light weight. Well suited by today’s heavy ground, all the selection’s wins have come at right-handed courses including twice at Limerick and if he returns to his early-season form, should figure prominently. Nine-time point-to-point winner Rocky’s Howya ran well in a recent handicap that has since worked out well, and while he would prefer farther, is largely dependable. Stablemate Jonny Mansie hasn’t run since scoring in June while Timmy Tuesday is capable on his day but his recent form is poor and he would prefer a sounder surface. Veteran Embittered won twice last year.
By Tom Weekes - WITHOUT EXCEPTION ran well in a higher-grade handicap here during Christmas and is ideally suited by conditions. A heavy-ground winner last February, he disappointed at Punchestown in November but ran well on his latest start, with both the fourth and fifth-placed horses in that race scoring subsequently. Veteran Cahirdown Boy was an unlucky loser of a Cork handicap chase 24 days ago and while now rated 106 in that sphere, hasn’t scored over hurdles since 2021. Grace Faraday reverts back in grade today and has useful recent form while Cordal Boy ran nicely on his recent reappearance run.
By Tom Weekes - Keen-goer SAVEFORARAINYDAY has been far too enthusiastic in two hurdle runs todate but is capable. From the family of Time For A Run, the selection was beaten only six lengths at Navan in November having pulled very hard and again ran well in a smart Leopardstown maiden over Christmas. Racing on today’s tight inner circuit isn’t ideal but she is likely to race prominently, which should help. Golden Wings showed big improvement when finishing third in a useful Punchestown maiden last month and being open to further progression, should get involved. Jennyfromtheblock, who runs in a tongue-tie, hasn’t raced since winning an April point-to-point.
By Tom Weekes - ARSLAN isn’t in the same league as stablemate State Man who won the 2022 renewal of this race, but he has nice ability and should score. A rare jumper and the sole point-to-point runner by top Flat sire Wootton Bassett, the selection finished third in a smart February bumper and was then beaten by two capable rivals at Thurles. While beaten at odds-on at Tramore on New Year’s Day, that race’s winner has scored since and today’s race is winnable. Tip Of The Wings defeated capable Raise You Up to win a point-to-point on debut last March, after which he was purchased for 95,000 pounds but hasn’t confirmed that early promise as yet. Tradonthebay is absent since running well on debut 383 days ago.
By Gary Carson - BIG DEE should be up to winning off this kind of mark. The Vadamos gelding looked like a smart sort when winning a Down Royal bumper back in November 2023 but has been a bit disappointing over hurdles. He did show more though on his handicap debut here over Christmas, when third to King Kali, and a similar effort may be enough to collect now. He had Marelly behind in seventh that day and that rival has gone on to score at Gowran since. On revised terms he can hold that gelding again. Wild Wild Wind has been placed on her last two outings and is another to consider.
By Gary Carson - LENJOLEUR DE PALMA has been progressive since joining Eric McNamara and can strike again. The Born To Sea gelding was a good winner here in November before a solid effort to chase home Its Bilbo in a competitive event at Christmas. He got another 4lb rise for that effort but looks capable of scoring again in this company. Is Charlie Around ran well when chasing home King Kali here at Christmas and could be the danger. Harry’s Dream has posted a couple of solid efforts since winning at Thurles in November and is another to consider.
By Gary Carson - GILLANE can make a winning start for Gavin Cromwell. The Shirocco gelding had some solid form in good bumpers for Kevin O’Donnell and there may be a bit more to come. He chased home a nice horse in Charismatic Kid at Navan in early December and may not have to improve much from that to score now. Burning Ability has been knocking on the door and looks like an obvious danger. He had Hey Now behind when third at Naas in mid-December but that rival is entitled to improve from his debut effort and could play a bigger role now.
