Born and bred in County Kildare, Peter Fahey grew up in Monasterevin and has managed to stay local, currently still training in the area.
Fahey was a successful jockey in the amateur ranks and ended up riding close to 100 winners. He won two bumpers on Bust Out for Jessica Harrington and that horse went on to win the Irish Arkle.
Fahey took out his training licence in 2010 and had his first winner with Intyre Trail at Dundalk in the same year. His most recent winner was provided by Chosen Comrade in a mares’ maiden hurdle at Limerick in October.
The trainer’s primary focus is on the jumps but he has also had plenty of runners (and winners) on the Flat. He has developed a successful partnership with jockey Kevin Sexton, who has ridden plenty of big winners for him.
There’s no doubt that the 200-winner milestone will be reached sooner rather than later, as he has a grand total of 196 winners over jumps in Ireland. Wexford has been good to him over the years and he has 18 winners at the track, as well as 14 at Fairyhouse and Galway.
Fahey has 72 winners on the Flat in Ireland and interestingly one of those came at Laytown, where they only race once a year. Dundalk has provided him with the most winners, a grand total of nine, with the Curragh and Gowran next on the list at six.
The majority of his winners in Britain have come over jumps and that includes victories at the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals. Both of Fahey’s runners at Fontwell managed to do the job so he boasts a 100 per cent record at the track.
Belfast Banter provided Fahey with the two biggest wins of his career, within the space of three weeks back in 2021. He became Fahey’s first Cheltenham Festival winner when coming out on top on the County Hurdle, beating Petit Mouchoir by just over a length.
Better was to come at Aintree three weeks later as Belfast Banter won the Grade 1 Top Novices' Hurdle. It wasn’t a vintage renewal by any means, but that won’t make an ounce of difference to connections and the gelding won comfortably in the end.
Owega Star landed the Grade 2 Tara Hurdle at Navan back in 2012, just two years after taking out his licence. He jumped the last flight well to score by just shy of two lengths and the front two were well clear of the rest that day.
The Big Dog was another stable star and he had a great year in 2022. Kicking the season off with victory in the Munster National at Limerick, he then went on to follow up in the Troytown at Navan. He also ran a cracker to finish third in the Welsh National that year.
Fahey also has six Grade 3 victories to his name, with Shop DJ, Time For West, Gypsy Island, Royal Kahala and Visionarian all scoring at that level.
Peregrine Run won 20 times for the yard, including the Grade 3 An Riocht Chase at Killarney in 2019.
