Having won his last two starts over fences, the Robert Tyner-trained Kobalt St Georges registered a first success over flights when landing the Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap Hurdle at Punchestown.

Sent off 11/8f under Phillip Enright, the six-year-old was held up in the initial stages, as Rebel Cowgirl led the way.

Moving closer into third after three out, the Brendan Keogh owned gelding went second early in the straight, as Ellies Rock went on and, Rebel Cowgirl weakened.

Pushed along to lead at the final flight, Kobalt St Georges stayed on close home to score by two-and-a-half lengths.

Robert Tyner said: “His mark over hurdles was tempting and he’s after coming to himself. We were disappointed for a while over hurdles, but fences seem to have changed him and he’s after getting to like the job.

“I thought Brendan (Keogh, owner) was coming over and I said I’d run the two of them, but the other horse (I’m Slippy) was disappointing.

“I was a bit concerned about the ground for this horse, but Phillip said he handled it very well. I suppose he was entitled to win off his mark once that improvement was there compared to his hurdle runs before.

“I’d imagine he’ll probably go back over fences.”
