Port Joulain (15/8) made all in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase to give Wille Mullins a fourth winner on the Fairyhouse card.

The point-to-point, bumper and maiden hurdle winner had been well beaten over a longer trip on his seasonal debut at Punchestown.

Odds-on favourite Karoline Banbou threw down her challenge between the final two fences and was almost upsides at the last, but the Paul Townend-ridden winner was in no mood to be denied and went on again in the closing stages to post a length-and-a-quarter success. Dr Eggman was back in third, giving Mullins a 1-2-3, after he had earlier sent out the first two home in three of the first four races.

“He jumped brilliant. Obviously it was a big drop back in trip, but he can go back out in trip again, it was just the race presented itself,” said Townend who was carrying the colours of Mrs Susannah Ricci.

“His jumping allowed him to dictate in front. Two good jumps down the straight probably won it for him. He was on top at the line and will go further in future.

“It’s a cliché but he’s a chaser. To be honest, he didn’t jump hurdles brilliantly but he does jump a fence really well. I think he can make into a nice horse.

“It was a pleasant surprise. It was hard to know what to make of what he did in Punchestown because he got so tired. The benefit of that, and using his jumping, probably helped.”

Townend was completing a double, having won the second on Bambino Fever
