Zeus Power survived a scare two from home to run out a wide-margin winner of the second division of the William Hill Challenge Series Maiden Hurdle at Thurles.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained gelding had been runner-up on his hurdling debut at the track late last month and was a well-supported 3/1 shot this afternoon.

Richie Deegan ’s mount was prominent throughout and led them on the home bend in the two-miler.

He was asked for an effort running to the second last but dived at the flight and grazed the turf with his nose.

The Protectionist gelding was much better over the last as he went clear to post an easy 16-length success.

Stable representative Michael Halford said:- "It was a lovely performance, he travelled really well and jumped great apart from having a little look at the second-last.

“He is improving with every run, is a lovely big horse and has plenty scope about him.

"He is a big baby, the penny is starting to drop with him and you'd like the way he is improving with every run. We'll see what Joseph thinks and he'll probably go for a novice race somewhere now."
