Bank Holiday Monday racing action in Ireland is two-handed with action on the Flat from Galway joined by the jumps card at Wexford.

They get underway at the southeast venue with the William Hill Each Way Extra Challenge Series Maiden Hurdle over an extended two-miles at 1.17 this afternoon and we've taken a close look at the opening contest and picked out two horses to follow.

NAP: Santo Sospir

Next Best: It's Not His Fault

Bank Holiday Tipple best avoided

The market is headed by the exposed Luker's Tipple for the Gavin Cromwell team. He's already got eight hurdles runs behind him and has made the frame on five occasions, including five silver medals.

The first of those was for former trainer Andrew Kinirons behind Willie Mullins' Sainte Lucie at Punchestown on New Year's Eve last year and she looked hugely promising that day, though has flattered to deceive in esteemed company since. Luker's Tipple ran well in sixth in a Listed handicap event at Listowel last month having made the move to this yard and has since gone down battling at Downpatrick (2m1f, yielding) behind a lesser-fancied stablemate getting plenty of weight.

The Starspangledbanner gelding sets the standard here with his rating of 118 but is proving hard to win with and, therefore, at cramped odds, he's overlooked for win purposes though he should give his running again and is capable of landing a race of this ilk soon.

Santo to deliver for Elliott

Preference instead is for Gordon Elliott's hurdling newcomer SANTO SOSPIR in the Robcour silks under Jack Kennedy.

The son of Motivator won a bumper at Punchestown in February under Harry Swan, showing tenacity to get the verdict having looked green and set for defeat with a furlong-and-a-half to run.

That bare form doesn't amount to much, but it was a likeable first run and there should be plenty more to come now sent jumping this season. He should also be better on this quicker surface.

Elliott's horses are running well and after a good weekend Kennedy arrives here with a near 30 per-cent strike rate in recent times. With doubts over the favourite, they can land the Wexford opener.

It's Not His Fault can go well

Newcomer Jasmine Pearl for Henry De Bromhead is worth noting if the market speaks in her favour and similar sentiments apply to Paul Nolan's Rules debutant Le Moulin Rouge, but an each-way chance is handed to IT'S NOT HIS FAULT for trainer Eric McNamara.

The four-year-old Soldier Of Fortune gelding shaped with some promise from the rear when taking third spot behind the market principles in a maiden hurdle at Tipperary this month under similar conditions to this.

He was well held but the duo that fought out the finish are promising sorts — more so than anything in this field on paper — and so with normal first-to-second race progress, It's Not His Fault could match or better that effort with Calum Hogan once more in the plate and taking off a handy 7lb.
